Painting the interior of your Toronto home is an easy way to freshen up its layout. However, if you thought your job was done after choosing the right wall paint, you may be surprised to learn the steps it takes to prep a room for painting. So, that’s why we’ve outlined them below.

Here, you’ll find the six steps to prepping a room for painting your home in Toronto, Ontario.

How to Prep a Room for Painting

1. Move Furniture & Inspect Wall

Before painting the interior of your home in Toronto, make sure to move all of the furniture away from the walls, so that you can inspect all areas of the wall. During your wall inspection, check to see if there are cracks, dents, holes, or any other surface imperfections. It’s especially important to check the areas where furniture may have been covering the wall, as dents, scuffs, or other imperfections can be easily overlooked.

2. Drop Cloth & Light Switch Removal

Spread a large drop cloth over the floor and tape the edges down to protect it. We also recommend removing large furniture pieces to avoid stains. If the furniture is too large or awkward to remove, cover them well. You should also remove all the light switches and plug outlet covers, or seal them with tape at this time.

3. Wall Touch Ups

Now that you’ve inspected the wall(s) and the room is covered, it’s time to start touching up. You can do this by using a lightweight spackling compound and a putty knife to fill and repair any holes or imperfections. Then, remove the excess putty from it and wait to dry. Once the putty has dried, use fine sandpaper to smoothen the area and then wipe the walls clean with a damp sponge or towel.

4. Painter’s Tape

If you feel more comfortable using painter’s tape, now would be a good time to get that step completed. You can mask the room with painter’s tape and apply your tapes in short overlapping strips, pressing down firmly on the edge for a smooth bubble-free surface.

5. Application of Primer

Applying a primer is an important step in interior painting that we’d highly recommend doing. A common question we receive from clients is if priming the walls before painting the home is necessary. And while it may seem like you can skip priming altogether, it’s almost always worth it. Read more about why we recommend priming your walls in interior home painting projects.

You can start by outlining the room with a primer to create a few inches of bands around the edges of the walls where they meet ceilings, baseboards, other walls, doors and window frames. After this you can simply stroke and fill in the rest of the walls with the primer.

6. Sand & Clean

Never skip this step! Once the primer has dried out, it’s important to lightly sand away bumps or any uneven surface to smoothen the layer (yes, even after you’ve made touch ups). You should also give the walls a good wipe before applying your interior paint. While not every surface will require multi-step cleaning, we encourage you to thoroughly check surfaces prior to any type of painting. Once this step is complete, you can begin painting the wall of your interior.
